It is that time to think about who the Player of the Year is in the state? During the playoffs, South Carolina's best players are on display and showing just why they could be the state's top star for the 2022-2023 campaign.
We’ve selected 10 girls high school basketball players from this season that we believe have stood out through the regular season and now playoffs. With the state championships just ahead, we look ahead at the state’s best.
These are just the candidates we’ve selected. We ask you the fan to vote for who you think is the Player of the Year so far? Chime in, throw a name at us you think is deserving or just vote away in our poll below.

MiLaysia Fulwiley, 5-foot-7 senior point guard, Keenan
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley has said Fulwiley is a “generational talent.” It’s easy to understand why. The five-star recruit averages 25.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 5.7 steals and 2.7 blocks. She’s a factor in every phase of the game. And, get this, Fulwiley has dunked in a game. That's right, at 5-foot-7, she can dunk. Fulwiley has signed with South Carolina.
Joyce Edwards, 6-foot-3 junior center, Camden
Edwards is a dominant post player, who just got named 3-A player of the year for the second season in a row. She is averaging 28.6 points,13.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.6 blocks. The five-star recruit is picking up many offers, with Oregon and Oregon State being the latest.
Hillary Offing, 5-foot-11 senior forward, Dutch Fork
The Brevard recruit just concluded a superb senior season. She averaged 17.8 points and 9.4 rebounds while shooting 47 percent.
Alaina Nettles, 5-foot-7 senior guard, Cane Bay
Nettles, a South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association 5-A player of the year, had a great all-around season. She averaged 20.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 5.1 steals.
Jazzy Frierson, junior guard, Hartsville
A versatile player who challenges defenses, Frierson averaged 20.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.0 steals. Frierson reached 1,000 career points and was named 4-A all-state by the SCBCA for the second straight season.
Amiyah Ferguson, senior guard, Timberland
Ferguson had a great final season in high school, averaging 19.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.2 steals. She has signed with Cal State-Northridge. Ferguson was an SCBCA 2-A all-state selection.
Ava Owens, freshman point guard, Pickens
It didn't take long for Owens to become a star. In fact, she played as an eighth-grader last season., Just look at the numbers. Owens is averaging 16.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 5.0 steals. And she's shooting 56 percent.
Raina McGowens, 5-foot-9 junior guard, Wren
Basketball runs in this family., McGowens’s mother is her coach. Her father played on a state championship team. Her older brothers played college basketball. Raina is the latest. She is averaging 20.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.1 steals. McGowens was named to the SCBCA 3-A all-state team.
Olivia Martin, 6-foot senior center/forward, High Point Academy
It's safe to say that Martin rules the post. She is averaging 19.4 points and 17 rebounds for the Grizzlies. Of her rebound, 9.2 are on the offensive end, giving the Grizzlies a lot of extra scoring chances. Martin, a SCBCA 1-A all-state selection, has signed with Converse.
Janiyah Squire, sophomore forward, Ninety-Six
The three-sport star had an outstanding season, averaging 17.8 points, 18.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots. Squire, who also plays softball and volleyball, was named to the SCBCA 2-A all-state team.
