Singh, Crews Excel in Leading Roles at SCBCA North-South All-Star Game

On most high school basketball teams, guards Sukhi Singh of J.F. Byrnes and Jayden Crews of Westwood would stand out alone for their play and leadership.
In each case, their play was sometimes overshadowed by equally talented teammates.
Singh averaged 16.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Rebels. He just happened to play alongside the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 5A Player of the Year and the team’s leading playmaker point guard Colt Fowler.
As the top scorer and rebounder for the Class 5A Division II champion Redhawks, Crews placed himself in a lead role. Like Singh, he also played alongside a dynamic point guard in D’Marcus Thomas who often inspired his team through emotion and non-stop play.
This past Saturday at Brookland-Cayce High School, both players got an opportunity to distinguish themselves at the North-South All-Star Game.
Second-half effort boosts Singh to MVP
Singh was on the winning side of the 97-92 victory over Crews’ South team.
He finished with 11 points, which was the fourth-most points on the entire North team. Jordan Williams of Horse Creek had a team-high 14 points, followed by Jon Webb of Westside with 13 and Gavin Hood of Lancaster with 12.

All of Singh’s points occurred in the second half when the North took command of the game. He was also credited by the final judges who selected him team MVP for his better all-around play.
“Not surprised,” he said. “I felt like I came out in the second half and played really strong and well. I definitely rebounded and got a few steals. So, I feel like I played pretty well.”
Singh acknowledged playing alongside Fowler made the game “easy”. It also prepared him for competing with other standout players as he looks towards the future either at Piedmont and Francis Marion.
Crews puts on a show
Even while playing alongside Thomas again, Crews managed to stand out as the South MVP.

He also could have made an argument for being the best overall player of the game. In scoring a game-high 26 points, Crews showed off the entire offensive repertoire as he scored 13 points in each half.
Whether it was outside shooting or driving to the basket for dunks, Crews allowed the South to stay close through the late minutes.
For Crews, however, Westwood’s success was not based on having 1-2 players dominating the action. He credited the chemistry built from 5 a.m. practices that allowed the Redhawks to make school history.
Crews is “ready to work” at Converse College.
SCBCA recognizes All-State players

The night before the All-Star game, the SCBCA held its annual banquet. This was an opportunity for the 87 players selected in five classificiations and the respective Players of the Year to receive their award plaques.
