Prospect Profile
When looking at prospects who were able to increase their stock during the pre-draft process, Ellis is one of the standouts. Following a solid showing at G League Elite Camp, he got an invite to the NBA Combine.
Following two seasons at Memphis, Ellis rounded out his career at USC for three seasons. Despite the team underperforming relative to expectations of late, he led the Trojans in scoring in each of the last two seasons, which is makes him so intriguing as a prospect. After scoring in double-figures 28 times last season, Ellis earned Pac-12 All-Conference first team honors.
The 6-foot-3 guard produced 16.5 points and 3.0 assists per game last season, truly being the offensive engine for USC. His 3-point shooting has always been what has taken him over the top, as he converted on 41.8% of his 7.2 attempts per game last season. At the NBA level, he likely will never have the opportunity to be a top scoring option on a team, but if he can leverage that floor spacing upside in an off-ball role, he will be able to carve out a role. On that front, he’s really improved as a decision maker through the years too.
Ellis plays with a high motor and is extremely quick, which helps him on both ends. He doesn’t have great positional size, but the effort and lateral quickness alone should allow him to hold his own against guards at the next level. He lacks the frame and strength to really be a defensive stopper, but has some of the baseline tools needed on that end to be adequate today.
A former top-50 high school recruit, it’s taken Ellis longer to get to this point than many originally thought. Regardless, he’s now a polished scorer with significant experience and an opportunity to help a team win at the NBA level.
