The Las Vegas Raiders did not have a good defense last season, and this regime knows that. The Raiders responded by signing or re-signing 10 different defensive players.

One of those players was Robert Spillane, who now dons the Silver and Black after spending the best four seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He comes the Raiders and expects to have the green dot calling the defense.

Last season, Spillane lined up all over the field for the Steelers. He lined up often on the weak side but took on some responsibility in the middle of the defense. Spillane’s versatility likely drew the Raiders to him in free agency.

Spillane comes to the Raiders with the expectation of taking over as the middle linebacker and becoming a defensive leader. This will be new to him, as he played only 23 percent of his snaps last season at that middle linebacker spot.

Spillane played the most snaps of his career last season and took on the most responsibility of his career. He will get another chance to do so now, tasked with even more responsibility than before.

The Raiders clearly trust Robert Spillane to be the man in the middle on defense, keeping everything organized for a unit that needed leadership. If Spillane can become the player the Raiders expect him to be, their defensive unit could be a difference-maker in the AFC this season.
