Steelers Get Bad News on Cam Heyward Injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain could be headed to IR.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers received negative news about their start defensive tackle Cam Heyward as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the captain is likely headed to Injured Reserve due to a groin injury he suffered in Week 1.

Heyward left early against the San Francisco 49ers and tried to return but was helped off the field after just one play. He was then ruled out for the remainder of the game.

According to Rapoport, Heyward is likely to miss multiple weeks because of the injury and is a candidate for IR. He is currently evaluating all of his options, including surgery.

Without Heyward, the Steelers would turn to DeMarvin Leal, Isaiahh Loudermilk or Keeanu Benton as their starter. Loudermilk is currently listed as the backup at defensive tackle, but Benton and Leal would also play the position if needed.

The Steelers are currently dealing with multiple injuries, including offensive linemen Chuks Okorafor and James Daniels, and wide receiver Diontae Johnson.
