“For the Audience of 1,” Tagovailoa shared on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
After being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, there were fans, and even some writers, clamoring that Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino should unretire his No. 13 number and give it to Tagovailoa.
That was never going to happen, so the left hander from Hawaii will forge his own legacy now, becoming the first signal caller in franchise history to don numero uno.
“For me, I'm not too worried about what number I have," Tagovailoa said on draft night. "I understand No. 13 is retired and it should be. Dan Marino is the greatest of all time, he is like the mayor out there. I have much respect for him. Whatever number I'm given by that organization, 78 or 99, I'll wear it. I just want to have the opportunity to go out there and ball.”
While wearing No. 13 at the Capstone, Tagovailoa finished his Alabama career with 7,442 passing yards, 87 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions in three seasons.
He holds NCAA records in passer efficiency rating at 199.4, passing yards per attempt at 10.9, and total yards per play at 9.8.
Tagovailoa’s college teammate, defensive lineman Raekwon Davis, will wear No. 98 in Miami, the team announced on Tuesday night.

Davis was selected with the 56th overall pick in the second round in last month’s draft.
The Meridian, Miss. native landed on the All-SEC First Team in 2017, and All-SEC Second Team in 2018 and 2019 at Alabama. He finished with 11.5 career sacks as a member of the Crimson Tide.
