Daron Payne Franchise Tagged by the Washington Commanders

The Pro Bowl defensive tackle is the first player to be tagged this offseason.

The Washington Commanders used their franchise tag on defensive tackle Daron Payne on Tuesday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Payne is the first player in the NFL to be tagged this offseason and will receive somewhere around $18.937 million in the fall.

The Crimson Tide product made his first Pro Bowl appearance this season (was originally an alternate), after recording 11.5 sacks, 65 tackles, including 18 for loss (all career highs). Payne's sack numbers were the second-most among defensive tackles as fellow Crimson Tide product Quinnen Williams finished with 12.

The 25-year-old had three less sacks and four less tackles for loss in 2022 than in his first four seasons combined.

The 13th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft is yet to miss a game since the 2020 season.

Payne will play another season alongside Alabama teammate and two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. Allen recorded 7.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 2022.
