What Help Does Alabama Need For A CFP Bid? The Extra Point

Who does the Crimson Tide need to lose in order to make the College Football Playoff?

The second edition of the College Football Playoff rankings were revealed last night, and even after a massive win over LSU this past weekend, Alabama held serve at No. 8 in the rankings.

The rankings in the top-8 remained unchanged, as no top-ranked teams suffered a loss this week.

As the Crimson Tide continues to win, its chance at returning to the College Football Playoff keep improving, but is it as cut-and-dry as simply winning out?

If Alabama were to win out, it would have wins over current No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 19 LSU, as well as a hypothetical victory in the SEC Championship Game over No. 2 Georgia. In most years, a 12-1 SEC Champion would be essentially guaranteed a bid to the College Football Playoff, but as we enter the second weekend of November this season, that may not be the case.

There currently sit two undefeated Big Ten teams in No. 1 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan. There's an undefeated ACC team in No. 4 Florida State, and an undefeated Pac-12 team in No. 5 Washington.

If there were to be three undefeated conference champions, it would be hard to imagine a world where any of them get left out of the playoff for a 1-loss team. That would leave one spot remaining.

This nightmare scenario for Alabama fans could pit the Crimson Tide against fellow 1-loss conference champion Texas, who as well as know, came into Bryant-Denny Stadium in Week 2 and left with a head-to-head victory over Alabama.

So the question is, how can Alabama avoid this scenario and what teams could possibly lose along the way to aid the Crimson Tide into a playoff berth?
