Blueprint for Razorbacks' Immediate Turnaround Under Silverfield Familiar to Fans

In this story:
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The 1998 Razorbacks football team was special. For a squad picked last in the SEC West that season, the Hogs proved the doubters wrong by taking home a share of the SEC West title that year.
But that's just scratching the surface. The team was littered with Razorback legends, including the venerable Brandon Burlsworth, may he rest in peace. According to former Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt, the best thing that players had was their love for each other.
"They don't forget about their '98 season," Nutt said in the documentary Resurgence. "How that turned, and it turned because of togetherness and caring for one another and playing so hard."
That's encouraging because this team is also projected last in the SEC and is aching for a successful year to get the taste of last year out of its mouth. But can the team embrace each other in the same way when the roster is constructed primarily with transfers.
Can you buy wins in college football. @RazorbackFB might be a great case study. https://t.co/8EhjEf0C7F

ALL IN
In that respect, Head Coach Ryan Silverfield has his hands full. But he seems up to the challenge and focused on that "togetherness," as well. His offseason mantra has been ALL IN. That's the name of the fundraising initiative that just upped its goal, too.
"This is a special, special group," Silverfield said in an SEC Network Plus feature. "We're going to do big, big things this year, OK? So make sure every decision we make over the next few weeks is doing everything as an individual and us collectively to put ourselves in the best situation. Really proud of everything we did this spring. We got to continue to take the steps in the right direction, continue to get better, because everybody's capable."
Silverfield resolved to build his Memphis teams on these pillars, which make up the acronym ALL IN:
• A - Attitude: Bringing a positive, personal mindset and strong daily approach to football activities.
• L - Little Things: Holding players strictly accountable for all the minor details throughout a day.
• L - Love: Deeply caring for and serving teammates, coaches to help them reach their goals.
• I - Intelligence: Striving for academic excellence, high graduation rates, and knowing the playbook.
• N - Now: Doing everything with an extreme sense of urgency to ensure long-term program success.

Dedication Night
Arkansas' winningest first-year Head Coach Houston Nutt has been on campus, taking in Silverfield's novel culture firsthand. He talked to the official team podcast about what he saw and the wisdom he dispensed.
"The biggest thing I shared with them was about believing in the man next to you and understanding what that Razorback on your helmet really stands for," Nutt said. "You're playing for an entire state. There's no NFL team in Arkansas; it's all about the Razorbacks. When you buy into each other and play with genuine love and accountability, special things happen."
Nutt recalled that he and his '98 Hogs held a "dedication night" after practice. He said his dedication first as he put his hand on a Razorbacks helmet.
"So, I started off," Nutt said. "'Hey, look, I guarantee you that I'm going to give you everything I have. I'm going to try to give you a plan to win every game. My door's always open. I don't care if it's 7 a.m. or 2 a.m. in the morning; it's open. I'm going to dedicate that to you tonight.'"
He still credits this night as one of the primary drivers for his team's success. Fans might have looked at Nutt like he was the captain of a sinking ship, but they soon jumped aboard when the Razorbacks started undefeated.
This season, Silverfield has been highly visible on campus, practicing what he preaches. He's making sure his student-athletes are in class. Perhaps more notable, he's making them sit at the front of the class, too.

In a press conference Aug. 16, Silverfield laid out his expectations for the beginning of classes and the way his team has melded.
We're going to handle our business starting tomorrow morning, make sure we're doing what we need to, showing up on time, doing those things," Silverfield said. "But we still have to keep that camp mindset because we are still so far behind on things [that] we've got to continue to implement situational football."
Silverfield pumped in noise and had his team stay in a hotel before its first scrimmage. This attention to detail is designed to alleviate the pressure on players to take it all in on gameday. This way, the players have familiarity once the bullets start flying.
"So all those different things, not only for me, for the operations staff, but for the players alike, I think it's so important," Silverfield said." Because we want our players to be as comfortable as they can when they take the field on Saturday, and a lot of that is familiarity. And so I thought that went well."
Then on Aug. 19, Silverfield was interviewed by Jim Rome on his nationally-syndicated radio show. He told Rome that winning now is the goal. This echoes his edict that no one in the organization calls his
"Yeah, I think the winning right now has got to be the mindset," Silverfield said. "There's no holds barred the way we practice, the way we prepare. ...
"And I think we're making the steps in the right direction. How many games is that? I don't know that. But I do know this. We're going to be one of the best teams in the country, the controllables. And that's one of the things I've been preaching."

This approach brought him success at Memphis, where he notched a 50-25 overall record and 27-21 conference record in his six seasons. That includes the team's phenomenal 2024 season, in which the Tigers won the Frisco Bowl and ended the year ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll.
The hopes of Razorbacks fans rest on the shoulders of a coach fired up to get to work. Will his efforts bonding the team translate to wins? Will the team buy into ALL IN?
