Damari Alston gives speaks on having a bigger role this season

In this story:
Sophomore running back Damari Alston is preparing to have a breakout season in 2023.
Alston, an Atlanta native, saw the field in every game last season but only had 14 carries for 85 yards. He helped out in the return game as well, running back four kicks.
It's a new year for the Tigers and Alston is ready to take on a bigger role both on and off the field.
Alston is one of many Auburn players who have played a part in helping with recruiting. He said that it is necessary to help Auburn get back to being a perennial contender in the SEC.
"Ever since I was a recruit it's just the way I live," Alston said. "In order for us to get where we want to be which is winning SEC championships, winning National Championships, we have to get the top recruits in the nation. We're in a good spot right now so we just got to keep it going."
Alston talked about bringing the energy to the running back room and getting the unit ready to compete.
"I feel like we all connect in different ways," Alston said. "It starts with Coach 'Lac (Cadillac Williams) though. Coach Lac is a funny dude in the meetings. He makes it fun. Everybody gets comfortable with him."
Alston weighed in on the addition of Michigan State transfer quarterback Payton Thorne and how he has gotten acclimated to the team.
"I met Payton awhile back," Alston said. "During my recruitment, I took a visit to Michigan State. I can see the leadership mentality he has. When he came in he had a binder with the staff's faces and was trying to get to know everybody around him."
Alston knows what it means to be a leader and he is prepared to step into that role this season.
