BYU Basketball Adds Scoring in UC-Irvine Transfer Dawson Baker

Baker has averaged more than 10 points per game over the last three seasons

On Monday, UC-Irvine transfer Dawson Baker committed to Mark Pope and the BYU basketball program. In three seasons at UC-Irvine, Baker averaged 12.9 points per game on 46.2% shooting. Last season, Baker averaged a career high 15.3 points per game, and he averaged 3.2 rebounds per game along with 1.2 assists per game. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Dawson was part of a UC-Irvine team that went to the NIT last season and was eliminated by Oregon in the first round. In that game, Baker scored 16 points and one assist and one rebound. Baker's scoring has remained relatively consistent against elevated competition. At the start of last season, Baker scored 19 points against New Mexico State, 19 points against LMU, 14 points against San Diego State, and 12 points against Pepperdine.

Baker gives BYU another scoring option and a another secondary ball-handler, something that will be needed as BYU heads in to the Big 12. Baker is the second transfer to commit to BYU since the end of last season. Baker joins fellow transfer Aly Khalifa as a BYU commit.

With Baker on board, BYU doesn't have any more scholarships remaining for next season. If the Cougars want to add more scholarship players, current members of the program will have to enter the transfer portal or be moved to walk-ons.

Stay tuned for more recruiting and transfer portal updates as BYU rounds out its roster for the Big 12 next season.
