Deion Sanders' Contract Buyout Turning Heads Before Coaching Carousel Begins

In this story:
The college football coaching carousel could be entering another expensive offseason, and the Colorado Buffaloes could be part of the conversation as questions continue to surround Deion Sanders’ future in Boulder. With programs weighing the financial consequences of making coaching changes, Sanders’ contract could become an important factor in determining Colorado’s next move.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel recently examined six major coaching buyouts that could possibly influence the college football coaching carousel. The report comes amid a period of significant turnover across the sport. For the Buffaloes, Sanders’ contract adds another layer to an already important stretch for the program.

Deion Sanders’ Buyout Creates a Difficult Decision
Sanders arrived at Colorado in December 2022 and quickly transformed the program’s national profile. After the Buffaloes finished 1-11 in 2022, Sanders led the team to a 4-8 record in his first season before guiding Colorado to a 9-4 finish in 2024. That season included a 7-2 record in Big 12 play and put the Buffaloes in contention for a conference championship appearance.
Colorado struggled to maintain that very momentum, finishing 3-9 in 2025. The team's disappointing results have increased the pressure on Sanders to demonstrate that the program can become a consistent winner.
Sanders’ buyout if Colorado terminates his contract before the end of the 2026 season is reportedly around $25.5 million. That figure would reportedly decrease to approximately $17.25 million in 2027. The financial commitment that is associated with a potential separation makes any decision about his future more complicated than evaluating the team's record.

Those numbers are particularly important as athletic departments navigate the changing financial landscape of college football.
One of the hottest topics across college sports currently, is the financial aspect that is now very much of a complicated reality. Schools have to consider coaching salaries, staff expenses, roster investments and other costs associated with building competitive programs. What could limit the resources available for other issues, is in fact committing tens of millions of dollars to move on from a head coach.
Results Over Outside Noise
Sanders remains one of the most recognizable coaches in college football, and his arrival in Boulder helped bring national attention back to Colorado. The Buffaloes attracted significant media coverage, generated renewed excitement among all fans and made the program a major topic of conversation across the sport.
That visibility remains valuable, but the long-term success of the program ultimately depends on whether or not they can create a positive product on the field. Colorado's 9-4 campaign in 2024 demonstrated what Sanders and his staff could achieve, while the subsequent 3-9 season raised questions about the team's ability to sustain that success.

This 2026 season is an opportunity for Sanders to show that Colorado can move in the right direction again. Every game carries significance as the program attempts to establish greater consistency and they now have the remainder of the season to do so.
At the same time, the Buffaloes must consider the broader financial realities of the sport in today’s world. Investing in a coaching staff and retaining talented players has become increasingly important as programs compete for top roster talent. Spending on a contract buyout could hamstring the program's ability to invest in a rebuild.
While all talk surrounding the buyout is a big story, ultimately, whether Colorado continues building around Deion Sanders or considers a different direction, his buyout ensures that the Buffaloes’ next move will be about more than wins and losses.
