Florida State entered the day looking to pull off a home run to cap off its 2024 recruiting class. It's been an uphill battle over the past year to flip five-star wide receiver and No. 1 prospect Jeremiah Smith from his longtime pledge to Ohio State.

The competition proved to be too much for the Seminoles in the end as Smith chose to stick with his commitment to the Buckeyes on Wednesday. He signed with Ohio State over significant pushes from Florida State and Miami down the stretch. Smith was even in Tallahassee last weekend for the final visit of his recruitment.

FSU was hoping to sign the No. 1 overall recruit for just the third time in program history. Instead, the Seminoles will turn to a class that is still filled with multiple blue-chip wide receivers such as four-star Camdon Frier, four-star Lawayne McCoy, four-star BJ Gibson, and four-star Elijah Moore.

Smith would have had an opportunity to play a big role with the Seminoles as Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman are expected to move on to the NFL. The Florida native caught 90 passes for 1,389 yards with 19 touchdowns during his senior season. He helped lead Chaminade-Madonna to another state title earlier this month.

The 6-foot-3, 198-pound wide receiver is regarded as the No. 1 overall prospect, the No. 1 S, and the No. 1 recruit in the state of Florida in the 2024 class according to 247Sports.

As of now, Florida State holds 23 commitments in its 2024 class, which ranks No. 4 overall in the country according to 247Sports.
