Charlie Condon Lifts Georgia Baseball Over No. 11 Alabama

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball program kicked their second SEC conference series off on Saturday against the Alabama Crimson Tide at Foley Field. Head coach Wes Johnson and his baseball program managed not only pick up one, but two wins on the day thanks to three Charlie Condon home runs.

In game one, both teams got off to hot starts offensively with them scoring five runs each within the first four innings. The Crimson Tide held the lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but a 441-foot home run from Condon knotted the game back up. Neither team would score until the bottom of the ninth when Kolby Branch smacked a walk-off grand slam to propel the Bulldogs over Alabama in game one by a final score of 9-5. Four total Bulldogs hit home runs in game one of the series.

Charlie Goldstein got off to a shaky start on the mound in game one, as he was pulled after five innings with a stat line of five earned runs, eight hits and four strikeouts. At the top of the sixth, Coach Johnson rolled out Brian Zeldin, and he managed to finish the game without allowing another run in four innings of work.

Game two shortly started after and the bats stayed hot for the Bulldogs. Condon went on to hit two more home runs in game two and Slate Alford joined in on the party as well. In a combined performance, Condon went 5/7 at the plate with five RBIs and four total runs scored.

Leighton Finley and Kolten Smith tagged teamed in the second game of the series on the mound and held the Crimson Tide to five runs, which secured a 6-5 victory for the Bulldogs. Smith finished the day with 2 earned runs, five strikeouts and four hits allowed. Finley, who started the game, rounded out his day with 5.1 innings pitched, three earned runs, four hits allowed and two strikeouts.

Not only did Georgia manage to pick up their first conference win on the season and their second one right after that, but they did so against a current top-15 ranked team in the country. The Bulldogs had a shaky weekend in Lexington, Kentucky against the Wildcats last week, and now they will be going for the series sweep against Alabama on Sunday.

Georgia now sits with an overall record of 20-4 (2-3) and has won three straight games after getting swept by Kentucky the weekend prior.
