G-Day: Observations from Georgia's Spring Game

Georgia football fans got a chance to see the 2024 Bulldogs in action at G-Day. The defense put on a show at Sanford Stadium.

For all the talk of offense this spring, it was the Georgia defense that starred for much of G-Day. The defensive line stood up multiple times, linebackers flew around the field, and the secondary was stingy without Malaki Starks. But in the end, Carson Beck and the red team showed what they can do, shredding the defense with less than two minutes to go, forcing a 20-20 tie.

Defense looks dangerous - It's been offense, offense, offense this spring, but on Saturday it was the defense that stood up. Georgia has finished in the top three of the recruiting rankings the last three years, and those defensive recruits are starting to shine. They've also had to listen to how good their offense is this spring. On Saturday, they were the more motivated side and played with passion, giving the offenses fits all day.

Mykel Williams shines - The Bulldogs didn't have a player standout on the defensive front last season. Mykel Williams was supposed to fill that role but he regressed as a sophmore. Another spring in the system seems have done him a lot of good as he dominated on Saturday. Williams got consistent pressure on the quarterback, tipping two passes and intercepting one. Georgia needs him to be a menace off the edge this fall.

Running backs - It was a limited sample size, but the running back race might be a lot tighter than we thought. Florida transfer Trevor Etienne is the odds-on favorite to start, but he looked like the third best back on Saturday. Both Andrew Paul and Roderick Robinson are healthy and laid the lumber to Georgia's defense. Don't forget about Branson Robinson either. He's projected to return from injury this fall.

Linebackers - Georgia has some studs at linebacker. CJ Allen looks like he good be the next great mike linebacker in Athens. He had a great play on Saturday, baiting Carson Beck into an interception. Raylen Wilson and Jalon Walker both looked great and Georgia's freshmen linebackers Chris Cole and Justin Williams look explosive. Sophomore Gabe Davis looks noticeably bigger at outside linebacker, making some solid stops in the run game.

Dominic Lovett - Mike Bobo has found his No. 1 receiver. Dominic Lovett has been praised for his play all spring and he showed why on Saturday. Georgia's first-team defense couldn't cover Lovett, who is entering his second season in Athens. Lovett hauled in four receptions in the half for 73 yards. He played sparingly in the second half but came in on the final drive for the red team and caught two huge passes, including the game-tying touchdown. Colbie Young, who is in his first year at Georgia after transferring from Miami, also looked like a star. The 6'3'' wideout made a ton of contested catches and beat up a corner in the red zone for a touchdown.
