Kirby Smart Provides an Update on Georgia's Tight End Room

Georgia has a strong group of tight ends trying to replace Brock Bowers, but do they have the depth to hold up this season?

Former Georgia tight end Brock Bowers is set to be one of the top skill position players selected in the upcoming NFL Draft. Following the departure of the two-time Mackey Award winner, Georgia's tight end depth chart is suddenly looking a little bare.

Junior Oscar Delp and sophomore Lawson Luckie return as the presumptive starters, but after them, there's a noticeable drop-off in experience. Tight end Pierce Spurlin recently was forced to medically retire from football due to a heart condition. Georgia addressed that depth issue by adding Stanford tight end Benjamin Yurosek via the Transfer Portal in February. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spoke about what Georgia is getting in Yurosek in a recent press conference.

"You know, knowing Pierce's unfortunate situation, we were going to be short there. And we feel like we're getting a really talented, intelligent, experienced, mature body type. And we need that at that position," said Smart.

Lawson Luckie and Oscar Delp will eat up most of the snaps but freshmen Colton Heinrich and Jaden Reddell are getting some crucial reps this spring.

"Lawson's having a good spring so far and Oscar's a proven player with toughness. We got to bring the two young kids along really fast Jaden Reddell has been dealing a little bit of a hamstring, so we're trying to get him back out there the best he can. But they need all the reps they can get, they just need to go out there and take a ton of reps and keep getting better so that they can grow."

"We're not where we need to be from a health standpoint in that room," said Smart. "It would help to have Ben [Yurosek] here, but he's not. And he'll be here in the summer."
