G-Day is a Massive Opportunity for Georgia's Defensive Backs

During Saturday's spring game, Georgia's defensive backs will get a chance to show what they can do against the Bulldogs' talented offense.

For so many years under Kirby Smart, Georgia's defense has been the team's calling card. And yet, this spring it's been the offense that's been getting a majority of the attention. Carson Beck is back for another year, the offensive line is experienced and talented, and there are weapons at every skill position.

"I think we have a chance to be great on offense." said Smart in a recent interview with ESPN's Chris Low.

Meanwhile, the defense has a lot more question marks. We don't know who will start at linebacker, Smart has had to defend the defensive line to the media, and the secondary outside of Malaki Starks is a mystery.

Saturday should provide some clues to some of those questions, especially in the defensive backfield. G-Day, Georgia's annual spring game, will be an opportunity for the Bulldog's talented group of defensive backs to get some live-action snaps against Carson Beck, Gunner Stockton, and all of Georgia's outstanding receivers.

We know Malaki Starks will start at safety, but outside of that, every job is open. Daylen Everette started opposite of NFL-bound Kamari Lassiter for much of last season but never put clamps on the job. Julian Humphrey will push to start on the perimeter as will five-star Ellis Robinson IV and sophomore Daniel Harris.

The safety spot may be the fiercest competition of the spring and fall camps. David Daniel-Sisavanh has played a lot of football for Georgia, as has Dan Jackson, but they'll be compteting against KJ Bolden, the nation's top safety prospect in this past recruiting cycle, as well as Alabama transfer Jake Pope. Joenel Aguero seems to have the inside track for the Star position, but he'll need to show he has the ability to be elite in coverage as well as in run support.

Saturday will be a test and an oppurtonity for all of those players. There may not be a better offense in the nation than the one led by Carson Beck and the rest of their teammates. If they can make some plays against those guys, it could give them the edge going into summer workouts and fall camp.
