2024 Defensive End Shamar Meikle Commits to Indiana

Indiana picked up a commitment from Shamar Meikle, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound three-star in the class of 2024 out of Miramar High School in Florida.

Tom Allen and the Indiana football team had its own fireworks to set off on July 4 this year, picking up a commitment from three-star EDGE prospect Shamar Meikle on the national holiday.

Meikle is a defensive end entering his senior year at Miramar High School outside Miami, Fla. He's ranked No. 1240 in the nation, No. 88 among edge rushers and No. 170 in Florida. Meikle took an official visit to Indiana in June, and he picked the Hoosiers over offers from Coastal Carolina, Toledo, Akron, Alabama State, Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Bethune Cookman, Bowling Green, Charlotte, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Howard, Jackson State, Kent State, Liberty, Ohio, Temple and Western Kentucky.

Meikle tallied 9.5 total sacks in 11 games played for Miramar during his 2022-23 high school season, and 21.0 tackles-for-loss in total according to MaxPreps. His junior season highlights can be found here on his Hudl page.

Meikle the Hoosiers' 14th overall commit in the 2024 recruiting class and the 10th three-star prospect that Tom Allen and Co. have landed, per 247 Sports. The other four commits in the 2024 class do not currently have star ratings, and Indiana's overall class is currently rated at 60th overall by 247 and 61st overall by the On3 Team Recruiting Rankings

Meikle's commitment could prove crucial for Indiana's depth at the position group moving forward, as he is the only defensive line prospect the Hoosiers have signed so far in the class of 2024. Indiana picked up a handful of defensive lineman in the transfer portal this offseason, including Andre Carter (Western Michigan), Philip Blidi (Texas Tech), Lanell Carr (West Virginia), Marcus Burris Jr. (Texas A&M) and Robby Harrison.

Indiana lost its two team-leaders in sacks from the 2022 season with the graduation of Alfred Bryant and the transfer of freshman All-American and Bloomington native Dasan McCullough to Oklahoma. Defensive back Noah Pierre is the leader in returning sack production for the Hoosiers, as he racked up 3.0 sacks despite slender 5-foot-11, 178-pound build.

At a towering 6-foot-5, Meikle currently would be one of the tallest players on the IU roster, and on the defensive line, he would only be shorter than redshirt freshman Aden Cannon.
