BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana football is hiring Matt Guerrieri as its safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator for the 2023 season. ESPN's Adam Rittenberg first reported the news Friday night.

Guerrieri was introduced as the new defensive coordinator at Tulsa on Jan. 11, where he was set to work under first-year coach Kevin Wilson, who was the head coach at Indiana from 2011-2016. But one month later, Guerrieri is leaving Tulsa for Indiana.

During the 2022 season, Guerrieri worked as a senior advisor and analyst under head coach Ryan Day at Ohio State, where he helped the Buckeyes reach the College Football Playoffs.

Prior to Ohio State, Guerrieri spent 10 seasons at Duke. He began as a graduate assistant before taking over as safeties coach in 2015. Guerrieri spent his final four seasons as Duke's co-defensive coordinator and defensive recruiting coordinator.

After the 2020 season, Guerrieri was one of three finalists for the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FBS Assistant Coach of the Year award. During Guerrieri's time as co-defensive coordinator, Jeremy Cash became a three-time All-American, and Duke had four additional All-ACC selections in the defensive backfield.

Guerrieri graduated from Davidson College in 2011, where he started at safety and was a team captain as a senior. He earned a master’s degree in Christian studies from Duke in 2014.

Guerrieri replaces Jason Jones as Indiana's safeties coach. Jones spent three seasons at Indiana, and he was hired as North Carolina's cornerbacks coach this offseason.
