Kansas Jayhawks drop in Top 25 polls after loss to Marquette

The Jayhawks took a step back in the rankings, but have an opportunity to bounce right back.

A loaded field in the Maui Invitational took its toll on the Kansas Jayhawks, as they dropped a semi-final game to the Marquette Golden Eagles. It was enough for Kansas to be dropped four spots in the latest AP Poll that came out on Monday. 

The drop wasn't entirely unexpected, as the teams ahead of them either beat them or are undefeated. Purdue took over the top spot with 60 out of 63 first-place votes. Arizona came in second with a single first-place vote, while Marquette landed in third. Just in front of the Jayhawks are the Connecticut Huskies, who garnered 2 first place votes. Kansas also dropped in the Coaches Poll, which had the same top 4 teams. However, Houston also jumped ahead of the Jayhawks.

The Big 12 had a total of six teams in the rankings, with Kansas and Houston splitting the 5 and 6 spots, Baylor coming in at 9 in both polls, Texas at #16 in the AP Poll and #18 in the Coaches Poll, BYU at 19 in both polls, and Oklahoma at 25th in the AP Poll. In the AP Poll, TCU, Iowa State, Cincinnati and Kansas State are all receiving votes. In the Coaches Poll, TCU, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Cincinnati are also receiving votes.

There are just a few games between two ranked teams this week, as #8 Miami goes on the road in the ACC/SEC Challenge to face #12 Kentucky on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, #10 Tennessee goes to #17 North Carolina. And in the final ranked-on-ranked action, Kansas hosts Connecticut in yet another early test for the Jayhawks.
