High Drama in the Big 12 for Week 2

In this story:
While Week 1 was pretty much all Big 12 in the results, this week had a lot of huge matchups. And while the suspense was at an all-time high, we definitely didn't get as good of a week in the record column.
Let's take a quick look around the rest of the play from the Big 12 in Week 2 of the season.
#1 Alabama 20 - Texas 19
The Texas defense was dominant in this one, but they weren't able to hold Alabama when it mattered on the final drive. Alabama had an uncharacteristic 15 penalties for 100 yards, so it's not entirely clear how much this was Texas being good or Alabama being bad.
But Texas lost starting quarterback Quinn Ewers to injury, and backup Hudson Card was also injured, although he finished out the game. It will be interesting to see how well Texas is able to play with question marks at the quarterback due to health.
Kansas State 40 - Missouri 12
For the second straight game, the team relied on the legs of RB Deuce Vaughn to carry them to victory. Missouri's tendency to shoot themselves in the foot helped a lot as well, with both QBs for the Tigers throwing a pair of interceptions. And of course, it wouldn't be a Kansas State game without a spectacular special teams play, this time a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown by Phillip Brooks.
QB Adrian Martinez didn't do much in this game, but he didn't need to. It's still unknown exactly how the Wildcats will fare when he has to try to go win them the game, but for now you have to give Kansas State a lot of credit for playing to their strengths.
Iowa State 10 - Iowa 7
This was everything that you would expect from an Iowa State-Iowa matchup, with ugly football played on both sides and a result that was in doubt until the end. Iowa finally scored an offensive touchdown, and it looked like that was going to hold up thanks to two Hunter Dekkers interceptions. But a touchdown pass to Xavier Hutchinson halfway through the 4th quarter set up a tense finish that was only resolved when Iowa kicker Aaron Blom missed a 48 yard field goal as time expired.
#7 Oklahoma 33 - Kent State 3
The Sooners got off to an abysmal start offensively and looked like they would go into the half trailing the visitors by a field goal. Instead, the offense came alive to end the half, and the defense contributed two safeties in the second half as Oklahoma raced out to a 30 point lead early in the 4th quarter before sitting on it to end the game.
#11 Oklahoma State 34 - Arizona State 17
A second quarter offensive explosion, sparked by a forced fumble on a big hit from Brock Martin to ASU running back Xazavian Valladay, gave the Cowboys a lead they would not relinquish.
The defense came up big in this one, stifling an Arizona State attack with 3 key sacks and never allowing the Sun Devils to get comfortable. While it took some time to get going in this one, the offense ended with a very respectable day.
Texas Tech 33 - #25 Houston 30 (2OT)
This game was the epitome of "start-and-stop" play, with these teams starting extremely slow in a hard fought defensive battle before the offenses took off. But they came crashing to a halt before they revved up again in overtime for a wild finish.
The Texas Tech defense was the difference maker in this one, as they held Houston to just 10 offensive points in regulation. But QB Donovan Smith struggled, throwing three interceptions, including a game-tying pick six that allowed Houston to take a late lead.
TCU 59 - Tarleton 17
Max Duggan has been electric since taking over for an injured Chandler Morris in the season opener. In this game, he threw for 390 yards and 5 touchdowns, and the Texans never challenged the Horned Frogs in this game. The running numbers were a little disappointing, given the talent that is supposed to be at that position this year, but it sure appears that TCU has its answer at quarterback.
#21 BYU 26 - #9 Baylor 20 (2OT)
The night cap was a game worthy of the billing that it got. In a preview of what Big 12 After Dark might look like, BYU overcame the absence of two starting receivers to get a big victory. BYU quarterback Jalen Hall threw for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in regulation, and Lopini Katoa ran in the touchdown in the second overtime.
Both defenses stepped up big, with both quarterbacks harassed all night long. But Baylor wasn't able to capitalize on two touchdown by Qualan Jones, and the offensive line didn't give Blake Shapen much time to work. Baylor will need to answer some questions quickly if they intend to repeat as Big 12 champions.
