Recruiting: Michigan football lands prediction to land top prospect in Montana

The tight end position has been a staple in the Michigan offense for some time now. Going back just a few years ago, Erick All, Luke Schoonmaker, AJ Barner, and Colston Loveland were all high-impact guys when it came to catching the football. It would appear Marlin Klein and Hogan Hansen are the next guys up for this year. But Michigan failed to land a pass-catching tight end in the 2025 cycle, so the Wolverines are looking to add a few tight ends into the equation in the '26 class.
Michigan could be getting an elite tight end soon. On3's EJ Holland placed a prediction in favor of Michigan landing four-star tight end Matt Ludwig. The 6-4 tight end reminds you a lot of Loveland. He is a two-way player in high school and has both athleticism and speed to be a threat down the field. According to the Composite, Ludwig is the 244th-ranked player in the class and the 10th-best tight end. He is the top-ranked prospect out of Montana.
Ludwig was seen as a Nebraska lean for a little while, but after taking two visits to both Nebraska and Michigan, it's starting to look like the Wolverines are the favorites. He is set to take an official visit to Ann Arbor on June 20.
Here is 247Sports' scouting report on Ludwig:
Ludwig is arguably the best prospect to come out of the Big Sky State in the last decade if not longer. He’s a two-way player who focused more on tight end as a junior and that’s where we see him in college as well. He’s a productive player who can dominate as an in-line blocker or as a pass catching receiver down the field. He has the physical traits that translate well to the next level to go with the on-field production. He’s a well built 6-4, 230 pounds with an 80”+ wing span with huge hands and can run. He’s natural with his hands, catches the ball well through contact and has the bounce to jump over linebackers and defensive backs. He has the positional versatility to line up all over the field including as an h-back and shows off the kind of all around game that should allow him to be a real difference maker. He projects as a high Power 4 prospect and someone with a definite NFL ceiling to him.
