Michigan State football continues to gain ground on the recruiting trail in the 2027 high school class.

Cleveland, Ohio native Munir Lewis has announced his top seven schools, and Michigan State made the cut. Joining the Spartans on his list are fellow Big Ten programs Ohio State, Purdue, and Illinois, along with Louisville, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech.

Lewis is a three-star edge rusher ranked 605th overall in the 2027 class, 51st among edge rushers nationally, and 17th among all players in the state of Ohio, according to Rivals.

Pat Fitzgerald has already secured four commitments from the 2027 class, including offensive tackle Jack Carlson, offensive guard Grant Adolff, quarterback Eli Stumpf, and running back Savior Owens. All four play on the offensive side of the ball, which means Lewis would become the first defensive commit of Michigan State's 2027 cycle if he chooses the Spartans.

Allen Trieu of Rivals recently spoke with Lewis about his recruitment and what he is prioritizing in his college decision, with development and culture standing out as the two biggest factors.

"When it comes to committing, I'm really focused on finding a place that fits me as a whole person, not just as a player," Lewis said. "Development is a big part of it. I want to be in a program that's going to coach me hard, bring the best out of me, and help me reach my full potential on the field."

"At the same time, the environment matters a lot to me. I pay attention to the type of people in the program, the culture, and the overall community. I want to be around genuine people I can build real relationships with, not just during football but in everyday life too."

"My faith is also something I take seriously, so having access to a strong Muslim community is important. I think about what my life looks like outside of football, being around people who understand my values and having that sense of belonging."

Lewis has not yet visited East Lansing, but he is scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Michigan State on April 3rd and 4th. He also has an official visit scheduled for June 5th, which will follow an official visit to Louisville.

According to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, Michigan State is currently the favorite to land Lewis, which would be a significant addition for Fitzgerald and his staff. Louisville and Ohio State are right behind the Spartans in the predictions. Ohio State officially offered Lewis last month and has taken a strong interest, given that he is a hometown prospect with clear upside.
