Notre Dame has now officially completed its coaching staff with the announcement that Marty Biagi will be the new special teams coordinator. This has been expected for the last couple of weeks and now it is finally done.

"We are pleased to add a coach of the caliber of Marty Biagi to our program,” head coach Marcus Freeman said. "He has coached his special teams units to great success at multiple schools. He is an elite recruiter and developer of talent. We are excited to have Marty here with us.”

Biagi has big shoes to fill, with former special teams coach Brian Mason winning the Footballscoop Special Teams Coach of the Year award last season. Notre Dame led the nation in blocked kicks/punts this past season, and Mason's Cincinnati squad did the same in 2021. Biagi has had success in this area in the past, and he'll be tasked with improving the team's return units as well. Biagi, a former college punter and high school placekicker, also has a long history of developing quality place kickers.

A former special teams analyst in 2016, Biagi is also known as a strong recruiter, especially in the south. His recruiting reputation goes well beyond special teams, with Biagi playing a key role in recruiting position players as well.

With Biagi now in the fold, Freeman has now filled his 10-man assistant coaching staff.

Here's a look at Biagi's coaching background:

COACHING BACKGROUND

2022 - Ole Miss - Special Teams Coordinator
2020-21 - Purdue - Special Teams Coordinator
2017-19 - North Texas - Special Teams Coordinator
2016 - Notre Dame - Special Teams Analyst
2015 - South Dakota - Cornerbacks
2012-14 - Southern - Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Backs
2011 - Arkansas-Pine Bluff - Co-Defensive Coordinator

Biagi spent the 2022 season as the special teams coordinator for Ole Miss. The Rebels ranked 2nd in the SEC and 14th nationally in field goal percentage this past season. Ole Miss also ranked 2nd in the SEC and 19th nationally with three blocked punts/kicks.

He served the two previous seasons (2020-21) as the special teams coordinator for Purdue.

From 2017-19, Biagi was the special teams coordinator at North Texas, where he had his best FBS success as a coach. Biagi was a finalist for the Footballscoop Special Teams Coach of the Year award after the 2018 season. During his three seasons with the Mean Green, Biagi's special teams blocked a total of 11 kicks and finished in the Top 25 in kick returns in 2018 and 2019. In 2017, North Texas finished 8th nationally in punt return defense.

Biagi was the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at Southern from 2012-14. His first Football Scoop Special Teams Coach of the Year finalist nomination came after 2014.

During that season Southern scored eight special teams touchdowns, which is an incredibly impressive achievement. The Jaguars returned three punts for touchdowns, one of which came on a blocked punt. Southern also returned four kickoffs for touchdowns, with three different players racking up a touchdown of at least 97 yards. The Jaguars also blocked four punts and three field goals in 2014.
