Marcus Freeman met with the media for the second time this spring Saturday afternoon. The Notre Dame head football coach update the status of three players, all from the defensive side of the ball, who have been out of action on the practice field recently. One of them is a veteran, while the other two are freshman early enrollees.

The first is rising junior linebacker Prince Kollie, who was not in action either on April 1 or April 12 when the media was able to watch both of those practices in full.

“Prince Kollie is still in concussion protocol,” Freeman explained. “It happened last week. Last Saturday I think. I hope to get him back this upcoming week and try to get some more reps out of him for Saturday (at the Blue-Gold Game). But he’s in concussion protocol.”

Kollie played in all 13 games for the Fighting Irish last season. He was primarily a special teams player, but he also saw some action at linebacker. Irish defensive coordinator Al Golden said later on Saturday that he expects Kollie to be part of the Irish linebacker rotation this fall.

Early enrollee cornerback Christian Gray had his first spring practice season cut short.

“Christian had a knee scope Thursday,” Freeman said of the defensive back. “He had his knee scoped, so he’ll be out for the remainder of spring.”

The 6-0, 184 pound freshman was a 4-star recruit out of St. Louis, MO.

Another defensive back, safety Ben Minich, is also out for the last week of spring practice, per Freeman.

“He had a procedure on his thumb,” Freeman said of Minich. “He won’t finish spring on the practice field.”

Minich was a 4-star recruit out of West Chester, OH. He had seen extensive reps this spring due to just three returning safeties on the Irish roster.
