Notre Dame has solidified its running back depth chart by picking up former Penn State runner Devyn Ford out of the transfer portal. Ford, a native of Stafford, Va., comes to Notre Dame with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Ford signed with Penn State as part of the 2019 class, and he was a highly sought after player. He was a consensus four-star player and ranked as the nation's No. 40 overall player according to Rivals, and Ford was also ranked as the nation's top running back in that class by Rivals.

The former North Stafford High School star rushed for 107 yards in his first career game and averaged 5.7 yards per carry as a freshman. He showed promise in year two as well, rushing for 274 yards in a Covid and injury shortened season as part of a three-man backfield.

Ford struggled to stay healthy the next two seasons, rushing for just 98 total yards the last two seasons.

Landing a player with his experience should help solidify the Irish backfield after Logan Diggs transferred to LSU. With veteran Audric Estime entrenched as the starter, Notre Dame is extremely high on its young players that fill out the depth chart.

Rising sophomore Gi'Bran Payne had a strong spring and classmate Jadarian Price has a chance to be a star if he can return to form after an Achilles injury. The issue with both players is they have a shaky injury history, with Price coming off his freshman season injury and Payne being limited in both his junior and senior seasons of high school.

Notre Dame also has incoming true freshman Jeremiyah Love, who also has star power, but he's a rookie. Five is the ideal running back number, and landing Ford - even with his injury history - gives Notre Dame one more quality back. With those four players now competing to fill out the depth chart behind Estime, the Irish coaches have increased the odds they'll be able to have strong depth behind their main back.
