Latest On Joe Rudolph, Notre Dame Offensive Line Coaching Hire

In this story:
Notre Dame is still in the process of finding its offensive line coach, but the search has narrowed down quite a bit, and right now former Virginia Tech and Wisconsin line coach Joe Rudolph is the leading candidate.
Rudolph has already tweeted out that he is leaving Virginia Tech, and Hokie head coach Brent Pry is already wishing him well at Notre Dame. All indications are that Rudolph will in fact be the next Fighting Irish offensive line coach.
Interestingly, Rudolph has not yet done his formal interview, and he has to pass through that process before he can be officially offered and accept the job. That interview will happen tomorrow (Tuesday), and the interview will include meeting with the higher ups at Notre Dame, and he'll also likely spend time with Notre Dame players.
If things go well tomorrow the expectation is certainly that Rudolph will be the hire. Rudolph has already spent plenty of time meeting with head coach Marcus Freeman and the rest of the Irish offensive staff. According to a source, Rudolph was quite impressive during that process and wowed the Irish coaching staff with his knowledge, teaching emphasis and how he evaluates offensive linemen.
Rudolph was one of several candidates to go through this zoom process and he came out of it as the top candidate after Matt Luke decided to stay retired. That is why Rudolph is the next candidate to come in for the more formal interview process.
Freeman and Rudolph have a long history that dates back to when the Irish head coach was a linebacker at Ohio State. Freeman enrolled at Ohio State back in 2004 and his career with the Buckeyes ended in 2008. He was a starter for the Buckeyes from 2006-08, and Rudolph was on the Ohio State staff for three of those seasons. Rudolph served as a graduate assistant from 2004-06 before leaving to become the tight ends coach at Nebraska.
Rudolph spent the next four seasons as the tight ends coach at Wisconsin before heading to Pittsburgh in 2012 when Paul Chryst was hired as the head coach. Rudolph coached the tight ends from 2012-14 at Pittsburgh, along with his duties as the offensive coordinator.
He was hired as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Wisconsin when Chryst returned to Madison prior to the 2015 season. He served in that position for seven seasons before being forced out following the 2021 season. He spent this past season as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Virginia Tech.
