Notre Dame rising junior wide receiver Lorenzo Styles has decided to enter the transfer portal. Irish Breakdown learned of this news this morning and it is now being reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Styles came to Notre Dame as a Top 100 recruit, and he showed promise as a freshman, hauling in 24 passes for 344 yards. He was expected to be a top pass catching weapon for the Irish last season, but that never materialized. He caught 30 passes for 340 yards, but drops and inconsistent play and effort plagued his season.

Sophomore Tobias Merriweather passed Styles up on the depth chart this spring and classmate Jayden Thomas has combined with senior Chris Tyree to lock down the slot. Styles got some work at cornerback this spring, but he has instead decided to enter the portal instead of trying to play both ways, make a move to corner or keep trying to win back a spot at wide receiver.

According to multiple sources, Styles is expected to transfer to Ohio State, where his father (Lorenzo) played and his brother (Sonny) is currently a sophomore. Expect Styles to make the full-time transition to defense if he does in fact choose the Buckeyes.

With Styles gone, expect to see more opportunities for Notre Dame's talented freshman class of Jaden Greathouse, Rico Flores Jr. and Braylon James, who were all pushing Styles this spring. Notre Dame welcomes a fourth freshman - Kaleb Smith - this summer. This group is young and obviously lacks experience, but it's a very talented group and was one of the nation's best wide receiver hauls in the 2023 class.

This move isn't overly surprising. There were rumblings from sources early in the winter that Styles would leave, and even some late in the 2022 season. To his credit, Styles decided to stick it out and compete this spring. His effort was good in the open practices and he looked to be getting on track, but he just couldn't rise back up the depth chart.
