Notre Dame Moves Up To 9th In CBS Sports Post-Spring Top 25 Ranking

Post-spring Top 25 rankings continue to pour out and CBS Sports is the latest to release theirs. Notre Dame checked in at No. 9 in the CBS Sports post-spring rankings, which was up a spot from its initial postseason Top 25 spot.

Here is what they had to say about the Notre Dame ranking:

"No Tommy Rees, no Tyler Buchner ... no problem? Sam Hartman coming over from Wake Forest just might make the Fighting Irish a playoff contender. There is strength at every position group. Ohio State, USC, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest (Hartman reunion!) all come to South Bend, Indiana. The arrow continues to point up for Marcus Freeman, who went 9-2 after an unfortunate 0-2 start." - Dennis Dodd

Ohio State was Notre Dame's highest ranked opponent, coming in at No. 3 in the CBS Sports post-spring rankings. That is the same spot the Buckeyes were at in the previous ranking.

In most rankings the Irish had two or three opponents ahead of them, but there were only two in the CBS Sports rankings. Clemson came in next at No. 10 as they swapped positions with Notre Dame. The Tigers were previously No. 9 with the Irish No. 10, but that flipped.

USC is a much higher ranked team in most polls, but CBS Sports isn't as sold on the Trojans as most. USC is ranked No. 13 in the latest CBS Sports rankings. The Trojan defense was their downfall a year ago, and that remains the top concern for CBS Sports.

"Caleb Williams could win back-to-back Heismans. He could throw for 5,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. But until the defense gets fixed, it's hard to consider the Trojans legitimate playoff contenders. It's the lack of that D at key points (136 points combined given up in two losses to Utah and Tulane) that kept them out of the Football Four. The D might be fixed with the addition of Georgia NT Bear Alexander."
