Notre Dame Football Practice Report - August 11

Thoughts, analysis and observations from the Notre Dame football practice

Notre Dame had its 14th practice of the spring this morning and the media was able to see the first five periods. Here's a look at what we saw.

TEMPO

After the stretch period, Notre Dame went to its offense vs. defense tempo period. It was the first team offense against the first team defense, and the second team offense against the second team defense.

Here's the first team offense we saw:

WR Tobias Merriweather
WR Jayden Thomas
WR Jaden Greathouse
TE Holden Staes (Mitchell Evans worked in)
LT Joe Alt
LG Pat Coogan
C Zeke Correll
RG Rocco Spindler
RT Blake Fisher

Here's the first team defense we saw:

VE Jordan Botelho
DT Rylie Mills
NT Howard Cross III
DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste
LB JD Bertrand
LB Marist Liufau
NB Thomas Harper
S Xavier Watts
S Ramon Henderson
CB Jaden Mickey

Here's the second team offense we saw:

QB Steve Angeli
RB Devyn Ford (Jadarian Price worked in as well)
WR Rico Flores Jr.
WR Matt Salerno
WR Jordan Faison
TE Cooper Flanagan
LT Tosh Baker
LG Billy Schrauth
C Ashton Craig
RG Charles Jagusah
RT Aamil Wagner

Here's the second team defense we saw:

VE Josh Burnham

NT Jason Onye
DE Boubacar Traore
LB Jack Kiser
LB Jaylen Sneed
NB Micah Bell
S DJ Brown
S Antonio Carter II
CB Clarence Lewis
CB Christian Gray

Notre Dame has been working with its nickel sets on defense the last couple of days.

Here's what we saw in the tempo period:

The offense went deep to Tobias Merriweather on the first play. Merriweather beat Jaden Mickey by several steps but the ball was underthrown and Merriweather didn't time his play on the ball that well. A better thrown ball and its a touchdown to Merriweather. He got free for a quick completion from Sam Hartman on the next play, but Hartman overthrew Jayden Thomas a bit on the next rep. Hartman hit a couple of quick throws on the next couple of snaps.

The big play in the second period was a great corner throw from Steve Angeli. The cornerback (didn't see the number) tried to jump underneath the route, but Angeli threw it right over top of him to hit Rico Flores Jr. in stride for a big gain, and Flores made a good play on the ball. Earlier in the series, Faison caught a quick out cut and speed outside for a big gain. He really has some wheels.

Some personnel notes:

*** Cornerback Cam Hart was out at practice and in full pads. He didn't take any tempo reps, but he was out there during the individual periods and looked good moving around. We also finally got to see Chance Tucker back out there, which was good to see.

*** Wideout Chris Tyree also didn't take any reps during tempo, but he was back there taking kick returns and looked perfectly fine during individual drills. Tyree was working on deep routes and was running fast, running hard and catching the ball very well. This is a guess, but I think they are just doing some workload management with him during tempo. But there is no health issue and he's definitely still the No. 1 slot, as we saw when the receivers lined up in individual routes. It was Tyree, Merriweather and Thomas. Greathouse is definitely going to play for Notre Dame. He continues to impress. In fact, and I believe I've said this before, Tyree and Greathouse have been the two more impressive receivers in the practices we've seen.

*** It appeared as though Andrew Kristofic was banged up today, and I was very, very intrigued to see Charles Jagusah out there during tempo as the right guard in his place with the second team.

*** It would appear the left guard battle is settled, and it settled early. It's a bit of a head scratcher. Not that Pat Coogan has won the job as much as it was settled so quickly, especially after Billy Schrauth spent so much of the spring with the first group. It's clear in the open practices that Schrauth is the more talented player, by far, but Coogan is more consistent from an assignment standpoint. Rocco Spindler is clearly the top guy at right guard.

*** We haven't seen Jeremiyah Love working through tempo period, but I got an eye on him during drills and he looked healthy and very, very explosive.

*** Tyree is slated to be the team's punt returner. He is also working in as a kick returner, along with Jadarian Price, Devyn Ford and Love.
