Notre Dame Post-Game Show: Irish Dominate Pitt
Notre Dame improved to 7-2 with a dominant 58-7 victory over long time Rival Pittsburgh (2-6). Notre Dame whipped the Panthers in every phase of the game, scoring touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.
After the game the Irish Breakdown crew got together to discuss the win. We discussed the big picture nature of the win, then broke down the brilliant performance of the defense and then talked offense and special teams.
PART I - Big Picture
Notre Dame was coming off a bye week, and we didn't really know how locked in the Irish would be against a struggling Pitt squad. After some early mistakes the Irish started to dominate in all three phases.
PART II - Defense Dominates
Notre Dame had yet another outstanding defensive performance against Pittsburgh. The Panthers got a big chunk of the little success they had (7 points, 255 yards) in the fourth quarter once Notre Dame had pulled its starters.
We discuss what worked for Notre Dame, even though they played with standout cornerback Benjamin Morrison for the entire game, and fellow standout corner Cam Hart for over half the game. Young corners Jaden Mickey and Christian Gray stepped up and performed well.
For the second game in a row one of the stars was safety Xavier Watts, but he was one of many standpoint. We also discussed how Notre Dame's past dominance up front impacted the game even before it started.
PART III - Offense Handles Business
Notre Dame shot itself in the foot a few times on offense, but there was a lot of good in the game as well. We break down why the game plan was effective, how early success from Chris Tyree impacted the rest of the game, and then break down the mistakes from Sam Hartman that kept the Irish from scoring even more.
