Transfer Defensive Back Antonio Carter Sets Notre Dame Visit

In this story:
On Friday, Notre Dame extended a scholarship offer to graduate transfer defensive back Antonio Carter, who spent the previous four seasons as part of the Rhode Island program. The 6-1, 200-pound defensive back is now planning on visiting Notre Dame.
A two-year starter for the Rams, Carter collected 105 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, one interception and 17 pass breakups in just 21 games. Carter also forced three fumbles and recovered another three.
Since entering the portal on April 16th, Carter has been garnering a lot of interest from several notable schools. He has reported offers from Texas A&M, Washington, Ole Miss, Iowa, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Baylor, Minnesota, West Virginia, Louisville, Oregon State, Indiana, Virginia, Georgia Tech, SMU, South Florida, Middle Tennessee State, UNLV and Utah State.
The Orlando, Fla. native has also already visited both Wisconsin and Ole Miss. Those travels won’t stop soon, with a couple of important ones coming up this week.
"Right now, I’m going to be visiting Notre Dame and Kentucky for sure,” Carter told Irish Breakdown. "I’m going to be heading to South Bend on Wednesday until Saturday and then heading to Kentucky from there. I think I’m going to save the last trip for Florida more than likely.”
Navigating that most interesting can be a daunting task. So far, Carter is doing his best to keep his eye on the prize and just enjoy it. He is truly grateful for everything in front of him.
"It’s been just a blessing to be in the position I am,” Carter explained. :I am a very spiritual person so I just thank God for all of this. It’s pretty overwhelming as well but I’m just grateful for all the schools, coaches and people who have taken an interest in me. I’m really just focused on making the right decision.”
Despite spending the majority of his Rhode Island career as a cornerback, Carter is being targeted by several different positions. That is evidence of his talent, versatility and how he could potentially help a team.
"Teams have been talking to me about different positions,” he explained. "Some, like Wisconsin and Iowa, see me as a cornerback. Then others like Ole Miss, see me more in the nickel role. Notre Dame wants me as a safety potentially. It’s really a testament to my versatility. I really don’t have a preference of where I play, just whatever gets me to the NFL.”
Then, of course, there’s the developing relationship with Notre Dame. It all started in the ole’ Twitter DMs, but has developed quickly. The Irish staff has quickly made him feel like a priority.
"Chris O’Leary followed me on Twitter, he was messaging me and just asking about position preference, how much eligibility I had and stuff like that,” he said. "Then we got on the phone and he really wanted to come out and meet me. He was on the road recruiting so he stopped by, then he got Marcus Freeman on the phone and everyone was on board to offer me. It was an incredible moment.
"Notre Dame would be a great fit,” Carter continued. "The religious aspect and education are both big for me. I just want to make sure that wherever I go, there’s a plan for me. I’m not coming in to just be depth. I have goals that I want to achieve.”
Carter has two years of eligibility remaining. After the visit this week, there should be a much deeper understanding for Notre Dame’s standing. For now, it is an incredibly positive sign that he is getting to South Bend for a multi day trip.
