Top 2024 Notre Dame Safety Target Jason Mitchell Updates His Recruitment

In a recent interview, standout 2024 safety Jason Mitchell went in depth on his recruitment

Notre Dame has put together an extremely talented 2024 safety board so far, including some of the top talents across the country. One of the higher upside talents on the board is Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco safety Jason Mitchell, who the staff likes quite a bit.

The dead period offers a break in the action for Mitchell, who transferred from Serra High School this off-season and is still tasked with navigating so much recruiting interest. In a recent interview, Mitchell went in depth on his transfer, recruitment, and some upcoming trips he will be taking.

Transferring can usually be a daunting transition, especially ahead of senior year. Luckily, Mitchell is surrounded by similar faces to ease the process.

“It has been good, we are just grinding,” Mitchell commented on the transfer. “We are taking advantage of this off-season to really get ahead of others. We are just doing what we do over here and preparing to win another championship. That’s what we are looking forward to.

“They are all my boys,” he continued. “We played together in youth football and all along. Growing up playing with each other, it is not really anything new. It is really just another workout because we are always just working together. It is family. We are here to get better and try to win a championship.”

After being a do-it-all performer for the Serra Cavaliers, Mitchell has opted to transfer to St. John Bosco for his senior season to focus more on becoming the best defensive back he can be. In nine games as a junior, the 6-4, 185-pound athlete played all over the secondary for Serra. He collected 30 total tackles and broke up two passes.

Mitchell also spent some time at quarterback on the offensive side of the football. He would complete eight passes for 75 yards, while also rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown. Several college programs are taking a long look at Mitchell as a wide receiver.

While there is more of a focus, you can still expect Mitchell to showcase his versatility in 2023. He is a gifted athlete who can do a lot of things.

“I am still going to play everywhere,” Mitchell said. “I am not going to play quarterback like I did over at Serra but I will still be playing everything in the secondary and a little bit of wide receiver. Wherever the coach needs me, I will do it.”

It should be no surprise that Mitchell has been in a lot of contact with many different programs. As of now, there are no schools that have really separated themselves. The next couple of months of visits should do just that.

“Honestly I am hearing from everybody,” said Mitchell. “I can’t even give you one school that is standing out.

“I have been to Washington, USC, Oregon and Utah,” he continued. “Coming up I will be heading down to Florida, LSU for sure, Alabama, Georgia, Penn State and Notre Dame. I am checking them all out.”

Right before the dead period hit, Mitchell did have a chance to get out to Washington to check out the Husky program. That trip did move the needle for Mitchell, who really emphasizes the relationship building part of the process.

“The trip was good,” Mitchell recapped. “I enjoyed my time over there. They put themselves into the conversation. I just got to spend time with the coaches and have personal time that I haven’t had the chance to have before. We got to know each other a little bit more. They are cool and positive people that can help me.”

Despite such a busy schedule, the talented defender does want to figure out a decision in the pretty near future. It appears that Notre Dame will have a shot to impress and be in it until the end. They will need to really impress down the stretch to have a chance:

“I want to figure it out as soon as possible so I can lock in and focus on how I fit in with that school,” he said. “I am not completely sure when I am going to commit but we are figuring it out.

“I am really just soaking it all in and enjoying it,” Mitchell added. “This is what I have been dreaming of. I am thankful, just soaking everything in and having fun with it.”

The California native is considered as a consensus four-star recruit by every major recruiting platform. Mitchell peaks highest on the On3 ranking, where he currently sits as the No. 188 overall player and No. 18 athlete in the 2024 recruiting class.

Mitchell is also being courted by some of the top programs in all of college football. Some of the notable programs who have extended offers include the Irish, USC, LSU, Oregon, Ole Miss, Washington, Utah, Maryland, Missouri, Washington State, Arizona State, Cal, Boston College and Arizona among others.
