Notre Dame 2024 Wide Receiver Class Is A Great Fit

In this story:
When you put together a great wide receiver class, the sum of the parts is sometimes even more important than anyone individual. When you look at the 2024 Notre Dame class, it’s very possible that both things are true.
Each of the three commits, Chicago five-star Cam Williams, North Carolina standout Micah Gilbert and California star Logan Saldate put together tremendous performances this past week. Each player showcased their talents, including the uniqueness that they bring to the table.
When discussing fit, this 2024 group should mesh perfectly. They are all very, very different and bring a different style to the table. Their Week One performances provided a really in depth look into why Notre Dame fans and supporters should be so excited.
THE DYNAMIC PASS CATCHER
It was a historic day for Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South pass catcher Williams, who accounted for five of the eight touchdowns that Glenbard South scored during their 56 to 21 victory over Aurora. That included three touchdowns receiving and two more as a kick returner. Williams showcased just how special he is.
That means if Glenbard South plays in the same amount of games as last season, Williams would be on pace for 55 touchdowns as a senior. No pressure at all, Cam.
Williams has long been the crown jewel of the 2024 wide receiver class for the Irish, especially after the junior season he put together. If his first game of the 2023 season is any indication, the Illinois star could content for consensus five-star status this season and perhaps even fight to be the top wide receiver in the class when all is said and done.
THE VERSATILE TECHNICIAN
After a solid first outing in their opening game, Charlotte (N.C.) Christian star Micah Gilbert really showed out for Charlotte Christian in their 34 to 13 victory over Catawba Ridge. Gilbert led the talented offense, hauling in seven receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
The senior pass catcher made his impact felt on all levels of the field. As a catch point player, after the catch and as a route runner, Gilbert was special on Friday night.
At Irish Breakdown, we even went in depth of the performance from Gilbert. His game is incredibly under-appreciated. Hombre has a claim as one of the more underrated pass catchers in the entire country.
THE UNDERRATED SPACE DYNAMO
Overshadowed by Carr’s performance, Salinas (Calif.) Palma wide receiver Saldate also had a tremendous outing on Thursday. During the team’s 41 to 12 victory over Soledad, the senior collected six receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
Saldate’s explosiveness was on full display, winning both vertically and after the catch. The former Oregon State commit could very well end up being a massive steal for the Irish.
This isn’t a second option for Notre Dame. This is a player, who wasn’t originally on their radar, but is a discovery that was found the minute the board opened back up. Saldate is a very, very good football player and brings a style that isn’t prevalent on the Irish roster enough.
FINAL THOUGHTS
To illustrate the fit, there is a legitimate possibility that Williams, Gilbert and Saldate could all be on the field together on the next level. They each bring a unique skill set, and occupy a clear role in the Notre Dame offense.
Chansi Stuckey continues to change the narrative around the wide receiver room at Notre Dame. The 2024 wide receiver group is further evidence of that.
