Oklahoma Commits Headline Talented Group at Local Scrimmage

Sooners' 2025 quarterback commit Kevin Sperry and 2024 running back commit Xavier Robinson headlined a field loaded with OK Preps talent at Carl Albert.

MIDWEST CITY — On Thursday, Carl Albert held its annual Titan Preview Showcase.

The reigning state champion Titans hosted six teams from the OK Preps scene, including Washington, Heritage Hall, Yukon, Tuttle, Southmoore and Lawton MacArthur.

Between the seven varsity squads, there were two OU pledges and five uncommitted players with an offer from the Sooners

Carl Albert teammates Kevin Sperry and Xavier Robinson are the two Oklahoma commits, with fellow Titans Marcus James, Trynae Washington and Trystan Haynes all holding an offer from Brent Venables and company in the 2025 class.

Heritage Hall 2024 athlete Andy Bass and Washington 2025 tight end Nate Roberts rounded out the group of prospects who currently hold OU offers at Carl Albert's massive scrimmage.

At the showcase, a group of three to four schools went rapid fire on both halves of the field to begin the game, prior to a live half of football between two of the seven opponents.

During Carl Albert's live half, which saw the Titans matched up against Yukon, Sperry and Robinson stole the show.

Sperry's second play against the Millers was a near 70-yard touchdown on which the 4-star quarterback lofted a pass deep downfield, allowing Washington to use his athleticism and pluck the ball out of the air over a defender.

"I saw a great matchup," Sperry said. "The safety came down on the bender with the post over the top. Really simple read."

Over the summer, the nation's No. 7 quarterback in the 2025 class moved from Rock Hill (TX) High School in the Dallas area to Carl Albert. Fresh off of a state title in 2022, the Titans look poised to repeat in 2023, especially with Sperry under center.

"Really natural transition, really easy transition," Sperry said about his move across the Red River. "I think the coaches and players make that a lot easier. ... Just happy to be here, happy to make the move. Yeah, ready for the season."

Robinson, another Oklahoma commit, also had a great outing on Thursday.

The 3-star running back ran hard, easily pushing off tacklers and lowering his shoulder to deliver a striking blow to defenders. At one point, Robinson got the ball on a run play to the outside and broke multiple tackles before effortlessly tossing a defender by the wayside.

Every time the 6-foot-2, 220-pound tailback touched the ball, it took multiple defenders to bring him down. After rushing for nearly 2,600 yards and 40 touchdowns as a junior last season, it seems as though Robinson could be pushing to break his own records in 2023.

Haynes and Washington, the talented defensive back/receiver tandem who both hold offers from the Sooners, also had a good showing on both sides of the ball. In the rapid-fire session, Haynes caught two consecutive touchdowns and was able to keep the ball away from his side of the field in the passing game at cornerback.

In addition to making a great play on the deep ball delivered by Sperry in the live half against Yukon, the 6-4, 210-pound Washington also had a nice pass breakup against the Millers as a cornerback.

James, a 3-star linebacker and tight end with impressive physical tools, looked good as a blocker on the offensive side of the ball for Carl Albert. While the 6-foot-4 junior still needs more refinement to his game, he has tremendous potential and has been discussed as leaning toward the Sooners in his recruitment.

On defense James didn't make too many highlight plays, but he hustled to the ball while playing with great effort and explosiveness.

For Heritage Hall, Bass dominated both the live half and the rapid-fire sessions.

The versatile 2024 athlete showed off his impressive dual-threat ability, running and passing for multiple touchdowns in the Chargers' scrimmage. Not only did the 5-foot-10, 200-pound speedster break tackles and outrun defenders to the end zone, but Bass was also very accurate with his throws and even hit a deep shot down the field for an impressive touchdown pass.

Bass is set to announce his commitment on Aug. 24, when he will decide between Oklahoma, Kansas State and Syracuse. After Heritage Hall finished its scrimmage against Washington, Bass spoke to reporters about this recruitment and his outlook on his final high school season.

"Feeling great," Bass said when asked about his decision date. "I'm ready to kind of get that out of the way and be able to focus on my senior year."

While he currently plays QB for Heritage Hall, Bass is being recruited to OU as a versatile weapon who would play most of his snaps at running back but would also see time as a slot receiver and possibly even wildcat quarterback.

Bass added that since announcing his top three, he has heard from the Wildcats, Orange and Sooners on a regular basis.

"I've been talking to (the Oklahoma coaches) quite a bit," Bass said. "Ever since I announced my top three all those schools have kind of been hot on my trail. All the coaches have been reaching out."

In addition to Bass, 2025 running back Barrett Travis, the son of a former OU football player, also had a solid showing for Heritage Hall.

Washington High School also has a high-profile Sooners' target in Roberts, who looked great every time the ball was in his hands. In addition to Roberts' tremendous size at 6-4 and 230, the 4-star tight end is surprisingly fast and agile for his stature.

According to 247Sports, Roberts is one of the top 61 players and one of the top two tight ends in the nation. After being committed to Notre Dame for nearly two months, the talented in-state prospect decommitted earlier this week and is reportedly favoring Oklahoma.

Cooper Alexander, the son of former OU tight end and nine-year NFL veteran Stephen Alexander, also plays for the Warriors and holds an offer from the Sooners despite committing to Iowa State earlier this summer.
