OSU Basketball: Cowboys Should Pursue Danny Sprinkle As Next Head Coach

The Cowboys should heavily pursue the Utah State head coach after his tournament appearance.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys were in dire need of a change around the basketball program, and they parted ways with head coach Mike Boynton to do such. Now, the Cowboys are in the college basketball coaching carousel looking for their next head guy.

FAU’s Dusty May is off the board after inking a five-year deal to send him to Ann Arbor as Michigan’s next head coach, succeeding Juwan Howard. It seems as if Drake’s Darian DeVries is going to end up at West Virginia, a Big 12 foe of the Cowboys.

So, the next best candidate might just be Utah State’s Danny Sprinkle, who is currently coaching his program against No. 1 Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. Unless a major change – like Kentucky moving on from John Calipari – happens around the sport, Sprinkle should be Oklahoma State’s top target.

As of right now, Sprinkle has led Utah State to a 28-6 record and being Mountain West Regular Season Champions. The NCAA Tournament appearance comes in Sprinkle’s first season with the program. The first-year head coach spent four years with Montana State, posting his two best seasons in his final two with the program.

Over four years at Montana State, Sprinkle held a record of 81-43 with a 52-18 record over his final two years before moving on to the Utah State job. He’s a proven winner who is climining to better jobs, and he seems to be a prime candidate to jump to a tougher conference and better job, which Oklahoma State provides.

The 47-year-old head coach could bring exactly what Oklahoma State needs in their head coach. He’s a younger leader with plenty of potential while also hold five valuable years of experience, making two NCAA Tournament appearances with lower-tier programs. Coaching in the Big 12 with a program that used to be a perennial 20-win team would offer an opportunity to continue to make the Big Dance on an even more consistent basis.

Sprinkle could provide the exact spark the Cowboys need, and hiring him as soon as possible after his tournament exit could be crucial for the transfer portal timing.
