Big 12 Men’s Basketball Midweek Rundown: Kansas, K-State Get Home Wins Over Ranked Teams

We keep saying that the Big 12 is a gauntlet. With six ranked teams, nearly every Big 12 game will feature at least one ranked opponent, sometimes two. Any team can beat any other team on any given day.

This week’s midweek games had two with both teams ranked. No. 9 Kansas beat No. 5 Texas at the Phog in Lawrence on Monday, then on Tuesday, No. 12 Kansas State demolished No. 17 TCU by 21 points in Manhattan.

In Morgantown, West Virginia got their fourth conference win over No. 11 Iowa State. In other games, Oklahoma State continued its winning streak with a 3-point win over Texas Tech, and No. 14 Baylor beat Oklahoma.

Here are some other interesting stats about the conference:

  • After Saturday’s games, Texas remains alone in first place at 8-3, and four teams (Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State) are one game back at 7-4.
  • TCU and Oklahoma State are at 6-5, meaning the top seven teams are within two games of each other, with seven conference games remaining for each team.
  • A nation-leading seven Big 12 players were named to the Naismith Midseason: Adam Flagler (Baylor), Keyonte George (Baylor), Jalen Wilson (Kansas), Keyontae Johnson (K-State), Markquis Nowell (K-State), Mike Miles Jr. (TCU)and Marcus Carr (Texas).
  • The Big 12 is the only league in which all teams are at .500 or above and one of just two leagues with every team having double-digit wins.
  • A nation-high 60% of the league is ranked in the Top 25 in both the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll.
  • All teams in the league are in the Top 74 of NET rankings; the only league to accomplish this. Texas is ranked No. 9, followed by Kansas (10), Baylor (11), Iowa State (13), Kansas State (17), West Virginia (19), TCU (24), Oklahoma State (35), Oklahoma (63), and Texas Tech (74).
  • Every other league has at least one team at No. 197 or higher in the NET rankings.
  • The Big 12 conference NET ranking of 27.5 is the lowest of all leagues; the next lowest is at 57.6 (Big Ten).
  • Big 12 teams have five of the top 6 and eight of the top 22 toughest remaining schedules, per NCAA stats: 1. Baylor, 3. Oklahoma, T4. West Virginia, T4.Oklahoma State, 6. Iowa State, 18. Texas Tech, 20. TCU and 22. Texas.
