Big 12 Men’s Basketball Midweek Rundown: TCU Topples Texas

In this story:
We keep saying that the Big 12 is a gauntlet. Nearly every Big 12 game with five ranked teams will feature at least one ranked opponent, sometimes two. Any team can beat any other team on any given day.
Now, the regular season is down to just one remaining game. The penultimate games were played Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week. The games started on Monday, with West Virginia and Baylor both getting crucial wins on the road. The Mountaineers upset Iowa State, and the Bears won over Oklahoma State. On Tuesday, Kansas beat Texas Tech and earned at least a share of the conference with the win. On Wednesday, K-State got a double-digit win over Oklahoma.
The late game on Wednesday was the week’s big upset, with No. 22 TCU defeating No. 9 Texas in Fort Worth. The Frogs never trailed and beat the Longhorns 75-73. With the Texas loss, KU won the outright championship. It’s the 21st Big 12 regular season championship for the Jayhawks and an NCAA record 64th conference championship.
Here are some other interesting stats about the conference:
- After these games, Kansas is at the top of the league standings at 13-4. There’s a three-way tie for second place with Baylor, Texas, and Kansas State at 11-6. TCU is at 9-8, followed by Iowa State at 8-9. The top six teams earn a first-round bye in the Big 12 tournament next week.
- Half of the teams in the league are ranked in the Top 25 in both the AP Top 25.
- All teams in the league are in the Top 68 of NET rankings; the only league to accomplish this. Kansas is ranked No. 6, followed by Texas (10), Baylor (12), Kansas State (16), TCU (20), West Virginia (24), Iowa State (28), Oklahoma State (47), Texas Tech (50), and Oklahoma (68). Every other league has at least one team ranked 175 or higher.
- The Big 12 conference NET ranking of 27.7 is the lowest of all leagues; the next lowest is at 58.0 (Big Ten).
