Why TCU Is Still a Factor for 2028 QB Trey Wright

The Frisco Lone Star standout has plenty of high-profile options, but a few things continue to keep the Horned Frogs firmly in the picture.

FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU continues to make a strong push for one of the Dallas-Fort Worth area's most intriguing quarterback prospects in the 2028 recruiting class.

Frisco Lone Star quarterback Trey Wright remains a major target for the Horned Frogs after receiving an offer from TCU following a breakout sophomore season.

Wright emerged as one of Texas' most productive young quarterbacks last season, completing 67% of his passes for 4,062 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions across 16 games. He also made an impact as a runner, helping Lone Star finish 15-1 and advance to the Class 5A Division I state championship game.

Overall, Wright accounted for more than 5,800 total yards and 59 touchdowns during the season.

His production has helped generate interest from programs across the country. Wright recently announced his top 12 finalists, a group that includes TCU, Clemson, Oregon, Michigan, Kentucky, SMU, Florida State, Houston, Missouri, Kansas State, Arizona and North Carolina.

Wright also told a KillerFrogs insider that he communicates with TCU on a weekly basis and plans to attend a Horned Frogs game early this season.

Despite projections from some recruiting services favoring Clemson, TCU remains firmly in the conversation, and proximity could be an important factor.

Wright is a Frisco native and has already made three unofficial visits to TCU. He also had an opportunity to speak with coach Sonny Dykes and offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis during the Horned Frogs' spring game.

Why TCU Remains in the Mix for Trey Wright

Wright said his familiarity with TCU's offensive system has also stood out during the recruiting process. “I really liked what they do on offense,” Wright said. “Their system makes a lot of sense to me since it’s similar to what we run at Lone Star.”

That familiarity gives TCU another selling point as the Horned Frogs continue to evaluate their options at quarterback in the 2028 class.

TCU also has competition from SMU, which has offered Wright and provides another nearby option for the Frisco quarterback.

An official visit to TCU has not yet been announced.

Wright is currently rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports and ranked No. 29 at his position and No. 53 in the state.

TCU Continues Building Through Texas Recruiting

For TCU, maintaining a strong presence in Texas, particularly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, remains important.

The Horned Frogs have historically benefited from their proximity to some of the state's top high school talent, and Dykes has continued to emphasize the importance of recruiting Texas.

That advantage could be particularly important with a prospect like Wright, who is developing less than an hour from TCU's campus.

The Horned Frogs' recent recruiting success gives the program a foundation to build on. TCU's 2025 recruiting class finished No. 24 nationally and among the top three classes in the Big 12, according to the program's recruiting rankings.

That class featured 31 high school and JUCO enrollees and 12 additions through the transfer portal. TCU signed six four-star prospects and 25 three-star recruits, with an average player rating of 87.62.

The class included four-star EDGE Chad Woodfork, quarterback Adam Schobel, wide receiver Terry Shelton and cornerback Micah Strickland, while three-star offensive lineman Kilian Registe also ranked among the program's top high school additions.

Now, the focus shifts toward the next wave of recruiting classes.

For TCU, Wright represents the type of in-state quarterback the Horned Frogs will want to keep close as his recruitment progresses.

His production at Lone Star, dual-threat ability and familiarity with TCU's offense have already given the Horned Frogs several reasons to remain invested.

With weekly communication continuing and another visit to Fort Worth potentially on the horizon, TCU has positioned itself to remain a factor.

The question now is whether the Horned Frogs can turn that proximity and familiarity into a commitment before Wright's recruitment reaches its final stages.
