This is a big get for the Bruins.

Under Chip Kelly's direction, the transfer portal has been a major point of emphasis in helping to shape UCLA's football roster.

The move to the Big Ten will necessitate an upgrade in both talent and depth. This is particularly the case on the lines of scrimmage. In need of offensive line depth, the Bruins unsurprisingly dipped into the portal in search of some help.

After sifting through various prospects, the Bruins were able to land a former 4-star prospect from another program that's been quite good to UCLA over the years.

OL Michael Carmody announced his commitment to UCLA via his Instagram account. A former Army All-American during his prep days, Carmody played the last three years at Notre Dame.

This continues a long trend of former Notre Dame players transferring to UCLA. Over the last few years, the likes of Shaq Evans, Joe Fauria, Rico Flores, Jordan Genmark-Heath, Ramon Henderson, and Eddie Vanderdoes have all left South Bend in favor of Westwood.

Carmody was a decorated prospect coming out of Pennsylvania. As a true sophomore, he was slated to be Notre Dame's starting left tackle. After suffering an ankle injury, Carmody's career essentially stalled. He lost his starting job and wasn't able to regain it.

While he has battled injury throughout his career, getting a fresh start with a new program might be what Carmody needs to revitalize his prospects of becoming an NFL prospect. He has played all over the offensive line for Notre Dame (at both guard and tackle). This sort of versatility is something that philosophically aligns with what Kelly and UCLA like to employ with their linemen.

The Bruins do need depth along its offensive front. The tackle position was an area of concern last year, and with two years of eligibility left, Carmody could end up being a very nice pickup at a position of need.
