Zach Charbonnet, Jon Gaines II Represent UCLA at NFL Combine

In this story:
Taking the torch from Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Jake Bobo, two more top prospects represented the Bruins in Indianapolis on Sunday.
UCLA football running back Zach Charbonnet and offensive lineman Jon Gaines II showed out at the final day of action at the NFL Scouting Combine, with both Bruins putting up notably athletic numbers. The pair had already made the rounds with scouts, GMs, coaches and the media earlier in the week, and their long wait to take the field appears to have paid off.
Gaines came in at 6-foot-4, 303 pounds with 33 5/8-inch arms and 10 1/8-inch hands. The Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, native ran a 5.01-second 40-yard dash with a 1.73-second 10-yard split.
That 40 time ranked No. 2 of the 20 interior linemen who participated, while his 10-yard split ranked first. Gaines ranked first with both his 32.5-inch vertical and his 7-foot-6 broad jump.
Gaines led all offensive linemen with a 7.31-second showing in the three-cone drill, as well as his 4.45-second 20-yard shuttle. For context, 28 interior offensive linemen have a short shuttle time of 4.47 seconds or less and 24 have been drafted, per Underdog Fantasy's Josh Norris.
According to the NFL's Next Gen Stats, Gaines earned a 98 for his athleticism score, which again led all guards and placed him firmly in the metric's "Elite" territory. Gaines' college production score of 50 brought his overall score down to 70, however, which ranks No. 7 among the guards in the draft pool.
Gaines started every game for UCLA over the past two seasons, protecting the record-breaking Thompson-Robinson and paving the way for Charbonnet and the Bruins' conference-best running game.
Charbonnet got going a little later in the day, after he was measured to be 6-feet, 214 pounds with 32-inch arms and 9 7/8-inch hands. His 4.53-second 40-yard dash ranked ninth among the 15 running backs who ran it, as did his 1.54 10-yard split.
A 37-inch vertical leap tied Charbonnet for fifth at his position, while a 10-foot-2 broad jump was good enough for seventh.
Charbonnet's athleticism score of 76 ranks 10th among running backs in his class, but by adding in his production score of 82, his total Next Gen score of 83 puts him at No. 3.
In the positional drills, Charbonnet showed off his balance of power and shiftiness with the ball in his hands. His raw testing numbers may not have popped off the stat sheet like Gaines', but Charbonnet still had a good enough outing to remain towards the top of some team's running back draft boards.
Charbonnet reportedly met with the Cincinnati Bengals – who may cut Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon for salary cap purposes this offseason – before he took the field Sunday, in addition to the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks. The All-American back who racked up over 3,000 total yards in two seasons at UCLA happens to have a very similar build to Mixon.
There are still nearly two months until the NFL Draft gets going in Kansas City, and Charbonnet, Gaines, Thompson-Robinson and Bobo will all likely reunite at UCLA's pro day before then. Guard Atonio Mafi, wide receiver Kazmeir Allen, offensive tackle Raiqwon O'Neal and several other pro-bound Bruins didn't earn an invite to the combine, but they are expected to put their own talents on display in Westwood later in March.
