An Injury Update on Detroit Tigers' Youngster Riley Greene

Riley Greene of the Detroit Tigers is battling an elbow injury and may be done for 2023.

As the Detroit Tigers play out the schedule in another playoff-less season, we may have seen the last of talented young outfielder Riley Greene.

Per Evan Woodbery, who covers the team:

Riley Greene is back in the clubhouse. He said he's going to continue to seek opinions on his elbow. No real update at this point.

Greene recently had an MRI but there's no word on anything official yet. He was placed on the injured list at the beginning of September. With time running out in 2023, he may not make it back on the field this year at all.

While his absence doesn't really affect things from a standings and results perspective for the Tigers, it's still a disappointing development for one of the key centerpieces of the organization.

The 22-year-old and former first-round pick has hit .288 this season with 11 homers and 37 RBI. He's also stolen seven bases, registering 378 at-bats on the year, about two-thirds of what you'd want him to get in a season.

If the Tigers are going to complete their rebuild and turn things around in the American League Central, they'll need Greene and Spencer Torkelson to continue to develop, along with their young pitching.

The Tigers are 66-79 on the season and in third place in the division. They'll wrap up a series on Thursday with the Cincinnati Reds at Comerica Park.

First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. ET as Derek Law (CIN) goes up against Reese Olson (DET).

Law is 4-5 while Olson is 3-7.
