The New York Mets may be pushing back ace Max Scherzer as he's reportedly dealing with a "minor" injury.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Scherzer's next start could be pushed back to Tuesday versus the White Sox due to an injury not related to his right arm, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

ANALYSIS
Scherzer is lined up to start Sunday against the Dodgers and the Mets still tentatively believe he'll be ready to take the ball that day. However, it's possible they'll opt to give Scherzer a couple extra days to be safe. A decision is expected later Friday. Mets manager Buck Showalter didn't want to divulge any details about Scherzer's injury beyond that it's not related to his pitching arm.

It's certainly good to know that Scherzer's injury is not related to his arm, but it also leaves open the question of what is ailing the multi-time Cy Young winner. He's battled back injuries before, so that is something to watch.

The Mets just activated starting pitcher Jose Quintana from the injured list and there had been ideas of him potentially starting on Tuesday, so the team will have to figure things out.

Scherzer is 8-3 this season with a 4.31 ERA. He's struck out 101 batters in 87.2 innings.

For his career, he's been one of the best pitchers of the last 20 years. He's 209-105 with a 3.15 ERA. He's an eight-time All-Star, a three-time Cy Young winner and a World Series champion (2019).

The Mets are 42-48 and open up the second half on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

First pitch is 7:10 p.m. ET.
