Arizona Diamondbacks Fortify Starting Rotation By Adding World Champion Lefty

After seeing prized left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez land on the injured list to start the season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have come to terms on a one-year deal with free agent starter Jordan Montgomery.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have come to terms on a contract with free agent lefty Jordan Montgomery, ending the offseason drama for the World Series champion.

With Montgomery and Blake Snell now off the board, the top free agent pitchers all have homes with just one day until Opening Day.

Jeff Passan of ESPN had the details on social media:

Jordan Montgomery is an Arizona Diamondback, agreeing to a one-year, $25 million contract that includes a vesting player option for a second season. Details, free and unlocked, at ESPN:

It's another aggressive offseason move for Arizona, who is looking to get back to the World Series this season. After adding closer Paul Sewald at the deadline last year, Arizona went out and traded for third baseman Eugenio Suarez this offseason, while also adding Eduardo Rodriguez in free agency. They also re-upped slugger Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to a multi-year deal.

Rodriguez is slated to start the year on the injured list with a lat issue, so perhaps that led the organization to be aggressive one last time. It's also a proactive response to what the rest of the National League West has done this offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers added Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Teoscar Hernandez, James Paxton and Tyler Glasnow while the San Francisco Giants added Snell, Jung Hoo-Lee, Matt Chapman, Jorge Soler, Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks. Furthermore, the San Diego Padres acquired Dylan Cease.

Montgomery was an integral part of the Rangers winning their first World Series title in 2023, going 4-2 in the regular season in 11 starts with a 2.79 ERA. He was traded to Texas at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals.

All in all, he's pitched seven years in the big leagues with the New York Yankees, Cardinals and Rangers. He's 38-34 with a 3.68 lifetime ERA.
