Detroit Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg as General Manager to Round Out Front Office

In this story:
The Detroit Tigers have brought in Jeff Greenberg to be their next general manager, the team announced Thursday morning.
Greenberg has spent the last 16 months as associate general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks. After completing internships with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks and MLB early on in his career, Greenberg spent 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs – including the last three as their assistant general manager.
Scott Harris was the Cubs' director of baseball operations and assistant general manager during that time, until he left to became the general manager of the San Francisco Giants in 2019. Harris started as the Tigers' president of baseball operations in September 2022, and now he's reuniting with Greenberg up in Detroit.
“I’m thrilled to add an executive of Jeff’s quality to our baseball operations leadership team,” Harris said in a statement. “Throughout this search, it was important for me to find someone who can fit seamlessly into the culture we’re building here. I also wanted to bring in someone with a fresh perspective and new ideas that could challenge us on a daily basis and make us all better as we strive towards our goal of bringing postseason baseball back to Detroit. We’re excited to welcome Jeff, his wife, Erin, and their sons, Leo and Sam to the Tigers family.”

The Tigers have not had a general manager for the past year. Al Avila was the team's executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager until he got fired in 2022.
Now that the 37-year-old Greenberg is in-house, he will report to Harris.
Detroit has not posted a winning record since 2016, nor has the club made the playoff since 2014. Prior to losing in the 2006 World Series, the Tigers were coming off an 18-year postseason drought.
