Miami Marlins Claim Declan Cronin Off Waivers From Astros, DFA Former Red Sox RHP Kaleb Ort

Declan Cronin is on the move yet again, as the former White Sox pitcher is headed from the Houston Astros to the Miami Marlins via the waiver wire.

The Miami Marlins have claimed right-handed pitcher Declan Cronin off waivers from the Houston Astros, the club announced Wednesday.

In order to make room of their 40-man roster, the Marlins designated right-handed pitcher Kaleb Ort for assignment.

The Astros designated Cronin for assignment on Jan. 31 in order to make room for first baseman/outfielder Trey Cabbage, who they acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels. They had just added Cronin on Jan. 4, picking him up off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

Chicago selected Cronin out of Holy Cross in the 36th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. The reliever worked his way through the White Sox's farm system before finally earning a big league call-up in 2023.

In nine MLB appearances, Cronin went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA, 1.636 WHIP, 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings and a -0.4 WAR.

Over the course of his minor league career, however, Cronin is 12-6 with a 3.81 ERA, 1.313 WHIP and 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Cronin has especially thrived in Triple-A over the past two seasons, going 4-0 with a 3.74 ERA in 74 games.

Cronin appeared to have at least carved out a role as a viable depth reliever down in Charlotte, but he was booted off the 40-man roster when the White Sox signed left-handed reliever Tim Hill in December.

This time, it's Ort who is losing his roster spot as a result of Cronin's arrival in Miami.

Ort spent the past three seasons with the Boston Red Sox, who wound up waiving the veteran righty in October. The Seattle Mariners claimed Ort a few days later, but lost him to the Marlins in December.

In 47 career major league outings, Ort is 2-4 with a 6.27 ERA, 1.703 WHIP, 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings and a-0.7 WAR.
