Seattle Mariners Sign Former Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles Pitcher Austin Voth

Veteran right-hander Austin Voth, who has strong ties to Washington, is set to join the Seattle Mariners after inking a one-year deal with the club on Wednesday.

The Seattle Mariners have signed right-handed pitcher Austin Voth, the team announced Wednesday.

Voth's contract is a one year deal worth $1.25 million, according to FanSided's Robert Murray. Seattle's 40-man roster is now full.

The 31-year-old had spent the entirety of his six-year MLB career with the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles prior to this offseason. Voth does have plenty of ties to his new club, however, considering he was born in Redmond, Washington, and attended the University of Washington.

Voth went from one Washington to another when the Nationals selected him in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. After nearly six years in the minors, Voth made his big league debut in 2018.

Through his first three years of MLB action, 21 of Voth's 24 appearances came as a starting pitcher. He thrived in 2019, posting a 3.30 ERA across 43.2 innings, but the righty's ERA climbed above 6.00 in both 2018 and 2020.

Voth moved into the bullpen in 2021, but he became a starter again when the Orioles picked him up off waivers in 2022. Despite bouncing back with a 5-4 record and 3.04 ERA to round out that season, Baltimore made Voth a reliever again in 2023.

After going 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA and spending two months on the injured list, the Orioles designated Voth for assignment. He cleared waivers and got outrighted to Triple-A for the rest of the year.

The Mariners currently have a five-man rotation in place with Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo, plus recent trade acquisition Anthony DeSclafani as a sixth option. As a result, Voth will likely open 2024 in the bullpen once again.

One day before they added Voth, Seattle signed former Los Angeles Angels closer Ty Buttrey to a minor league deal, giving the team an additional veteran they could utilize out of the bullpen this year.
