Veteran Slugger Luke Voit Opts Out of Contract With New York Mets

The former New York Yankees first baseman will leave the Mets' organization having never played for their major league club this season.

First baseman Luke Voit has opted out of his contract with the New York Mets, Metsmerized Online editor-in-chief Mike Mayer reported Thursday.

Voit signed a minor league contract with the Mets on June 11, but he never made it to the majors. He was batting .264 with 14 home runs, 35 RBI and a 1.058 through 37 games with Triple-A Syracuse.

The 6-foot-2, 258-pound slugger has been constantly bouncing around over the past two seasons, getting traded twice and released twice in the past 17 months.

Voit started his career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017, but didn't break out until he landed with the New York Yankees the following year. From 2018 to 2020, Voit hit .278 with a .913 OPS, adding 43 home runs and 110 RBI per 162 games. Voit even finished ninth in AL MVP voting in the shortened 2020 season, leading the league in homers and posting a career-high WAR.

After getting traded to the San Diego Padres, then the Washington Nationals, Voit signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers this past offseason. Voit played 22 games for the Brewers in 2023, batting .221 with a .548 OPS and no home runs.

Milwaukee designated Voit for assignment on May 29, and he wound up in the Mets' farm system two weeks later. Voit's chances of carving out real major league playing time with his new team were suspect from the start, considering New York had All-Star Pete Alonso at first base and fan favorite Daniel Vogelbach at designated hitter.

While Voit showed plenty of power in the International League, it remains to be seen if another major league team will take a flier on the 32-year-old this season.
