With so many great fights on the UFC 291 card, one fight that was lost in the shuffle was Gabriel Bonfim against Trevin Giles. Bonfim went into the night undefeated and boasted a one-hundred percent finish rate in 14 career fights. Giles was entering the fight as a betting underdog for the first time in his UFC career.

It didn’t take long for Bonfim to show that he was not only a prospect in the welterweight division, but a full-blown contender.

“Marretinha” wasted no time after the bell sounded to begin the first round immediately swarming Giles with a barrage of punches before picking him up and slamming him to the mat. Bonfim quickly jumped on a guillotine choke and forced a submission.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan spoke with Bonfim after the fight and it was clear that he already knew who he was going to call out.

“I'm here to ask for a ranked guy,” said Bonfim. “Neil Magny I’m ready for you or anybody in this division.”

Neil Magny is currently the 11th-ranked fighter in the UFC welterweight division, and it is clear that Bonfim believes he is ready to break into the top-15. Magny has stopped many up-and-coming prospects, but not many of the caliber of Bonfim.

The Brazillian fighter has now proven he can compete at the highest level, but he has much grander plans than just contending, he says he will one day be the champion at welterweight.

“I am expecting this because I’ve been working every day to be the champion of the division”, Bonfim said. “I will be the champion of this division."
