ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No. 2-seed Stillwater Ponies (23-6) defeated the No. 7-seed Andover Huskies (15-14) 5-0 in the 2025 Minnesota (MSHSL) high school boys hockey state tournament Class 2A quarterfinals on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Andover started the season with an 0-9 record, but the Huskies found good form in January before losing two games to inferior opponents in Blaine and Centennial in February. The lack of consistency gave the Huskies some doubt about themselves throughout the season.

But they rallied and won their section. Now they had to face the No. 2-seed in the tournament, Stillwater.

Stillwater pushed the Huskies early, and the Ponies scored two minutes and 40 seconds into the game with a goal from senior Brody Dustin.

“Coming into the game, we wanted to stick to our game and play physical,” Dustin said.

Stillwater scored again in the first period, which was not helpful for an Andover team needing to build confidence early in the game.

“Sometimes we feel like we don’t belong with teams like this,” Andover coach Mark Manney said. “Usually you get five or six shifts into the game and you settle down and realize that you do, but today we never got there.”

The Huskies finished the game with only four fewer shots-on-goal than Stillwater, but the Ponies chances were of much higher quality. Stillwater forced turnovers often and worked quickly to generate scoring chances.

“We want to play offense as soon as we can, so our reload is a real thing that we have to work on all the time,” Stillwater coach Greg Zanon said. “These guys do a great job at it.”

Stillwater goalie Cal Conway, a transfer from Andover, kept all 27 shots he faced out of the back of the net.

Stillwater advances to play the winner of No. 3-seed St. Thomas Academy vs. No. 6-seed Shakopee in the Class 2A semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. the Xcel Energy Center.
